The thoughts that come to us just before we go to sleep or just as we wake up vary between unusual and insightful, for me, these thoughts or queries usually dissipate over the coarse of the day, or night. On rare occasion they stay with me and I am consumed by them, the latest one is this; Is Tetris a Crafting Game?

Now on the surface the question seemed simple, surely it was just a matter of defining a craft game and testing to see if Tetris fit into the description as neatly as the shapes in the game fit…

My personal musing on the influence and status of crafts due to the pandemic.

Foil Art — A craft project I created for my youth club

2020 was an unusual year for many people but it has also seen a surge in DIY in crafting projects. This increase in creative expression has not just been with parents and children, it has in fact spanned the age groups and given many people the time and space to realise their artistic dreams.

It is interesting that despite the surge in personal creative projects the art has also suffered a major blow this year, and it is not just the performing arts that have suffered. Museums, creative workshops and hobby groups have been challenge to find alternative ways of…

Inference and Art Style in Minecraft

Let me start of by saying that while I was aware of Minecraft I did not begin to play it until I began research for my Masters dissertation. It was an interesting a creatively enlightening experience which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I hope in the future to do more research involving Minecraft but that's another story.

Minecraft, due to its cube artistic style, relies partially on player inference, but does combines detailed textures with descriptive titles to inform players of materials. …

As part of a study I did surrounding crafting simulation game for my dissertation I created a method of calculating player input. I did this while studying my MA in Independent Games and Playable Experience Design.

Excerpt from my dissertation:

“ Games which rely on the collection of materials often focus on a virtual depiction of skill which improve over time based on the player’s continued engagement with the crafting system. Games that directly require player input within the crafting mechanic rely on players’ real-world dexterity but are also modelled with the concept of the player improving over time through continued practice in using…

In my exploration of game few have solidified themselves so securely in my personal collection of positive Jamaican representation coupled with create expression. So what is this glorious game I speak of? Very simply put it was a creative design single player game set partiacially in an imaginary world where the player is invited to illustrate the characters or key features of particular scenes.

In 1997 a game was release, it was fun, creative, interesting, user friendly and provided me with cultural representation in my childhood. To a young girl not familiar with seeing female protagonist lead games especially not…

I have always found fashion to be a fantastic medium for expression, while it still has some evolution to do in the areas of representation and politics I think it has come a long way. I am always particularly fond of exploring its technical developments within the smart fashion sub-group of fashion. As I have a background in fashion design and education coupled with a vested interest in games I find my social media and news feeds awash with both topics, sometime combined into one topic. One of the things I have notice is how within fashion the idea of…

Inspiration

This game was a short collection game I made for the #Calvino20 Game Jam on itch.io focused on the works of Italo Calvino. My game was inspired mainly by his story entitled The Distance of the Moon although I did take some influence from some of his other works too.

Prior to discovering this Game Jam I had not been lucky enough to come across theddworks of Calvino but I was intrigued. I wondered, who was this person who was so inspiring that they had a game jam completely focused on them? And so the first thing that I did…

This was an experiential maze game designed to be mildly disorientating and dream like. It was the first 3D game that I ever made, it was very enjoyable because it provided me with a range of new challenges.

You are dreaming, in a cardboard maze with strange box people and independently moving shapes in corners. You start in a room with a box that clearly states that it is locked, all you have is your pink flashlight to help you navigate this strange world and blue stars in the distance.

The goal of the game is simple, it is to…

The Tao of Ray was the very first digital game that I ever created with a full game loop. Its a lovely 2D game with in which I created everything from the code to the art. As I was starting out in the industry of game design, coming from an education and fashion design background, I wanted to challenge myself to create all the aesthetics and write the code myself to make the game in order to better understand the scope of a project like this.

The aim of this cute 2D game was to help Ray the rat get…

Going into a new field is an interesting journey of establishing your transferable skill, applying them and believing in yourself. This year I got the opportunity to work with some fantastic people in my first ever game jam experience.

It was a really exciting to be able to participate in not just my first game jam but a global game jam. This years theme was repair and it had a gorgeous inspirational video attached to it, I particularly liked the industrial sewing machine inclusions. I was privileged enough to be part of the team that created a truly moving narrative…
